The Emblem of Japan

The "Sakura" is emblematic tree of the japan. At the end of March, one of the most awaited moment is flowering of the Sakura. Those cherry blossoms announce springs and the end of the winter but also the "Hanami" which has not really an English translation. In Japanese tradition the Hanami is an opportunity to make a picnic and to go to see the cherry blossoms.

The Hanami custom began at the time of Nara ( 8th century)

 because the flowering corresponded at the beginning of rice planting and the revival of agricultural activities, offerings were made under the tree to the gods who lived there and peasants drank sake in honor of the gods. Later, the Imperial Court in Kyoto took over and expanded the festival, accompanying dishes and sake and  linking contemplation of flowers to writing poems. This fact of eat and drink under the tree was taken over by the samouraïs and after by the people.

The Sakura celebrated is not the tree that gives cherries, the other one is another variety, it is a only grown for its flowers tree. Flowering lasts only a few days, but during this period, the whole country goes in unison colors tree adorning themselves with all shades of pink.

If the chrysanthemum flower is the official emblem of Japan, as associated with the imperial family, the Japanese recognize primarily in cherry blossom with five petals. Countless artistic works are dedicated and songs, from the traditional to the J-Pop, this decorative motif is declined at infinity on the kimono, dishes, furniture, etc.. If you pay attention to piece of 100 yen you will see a cherry blossom.
